![]() ![]() The particular dealership near me that I would be taking it to (Bert’s Mega Mall) has a very strict service policy, so strict that they won’t work on anything more than 10 years old. In other words, I’d be gambling by simply taking my bike in and praying that whatever is wrong isn’t related to the exhaust or ECU. However, the dealer/Kawasaki can decline a warranty claim if they determine that a failure was caused by an aftermarket part.Īnd the dealership will have the upper hand here since they will have my bike in their possession, and at that point it’s my word (just another motorcycle owner) vs a long established and highly profitable mega dealership. I did check, and I’m aware that because of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, the dealer nor Kawasaki can deny a warranty repair claim that is deemed unrelated to any installed aftermarket part. Yes, I also think the ticking sounds like a valve train issue, which shouldn’t be able to be linked to the exhaust or the ECU as being the cause for failure. I had two more ideas, the 2nd being the most desirable for me.ġ) Find someone local or from this site who would be willing to either lend or rent me their stock ECU so I can take it into the dealership.Ģ) Find a repair shop in So Calif that is authorized to perform Kawasaki warranty repairs, AND won't simply say "no" to warranty repairs because there are mods (aftermarket exhaust and flashed ECU) done to the bike.ĭoes anyone here have a stock ECU that they'd be willing to loan or rent to me so that I can take my bike into the local dealership and not have to worry about them voiding my warranty, or does anyone in the So Calif area know of an authorized Kawi warranty repair shop that won't void the warranty because of the Cobra exhaust and flashed ECU? But I have about another 10 places to call still. So far I haven't found anyone that has one for sale yet, even on eBay. If they find anything wrong, then it gets fixed under warranty. My thought was to try to locate a good used stock ECU at a motorcycle salvage / used parts seller so that I can take it in to have the dealership inspect my bike (with stock exhaust and ECU) for any issues. I spoke with Ivan on the 22nd of last month and he filled me in on some other areas to check, and also offered to reflash my ECU back to stock if I wanted to, so that is an option that is appreciated.Īll the previous symptoms (fluctuating idle at start up regardless of engine temp, popping on decel and backfiring when "chopping" the throttle) are still present, and now I have the rapid "ticking" emitting from the rear cylinder head cover. In either case, it looks like I've got some work ahead of me and more money to spend before I can even ride again. ![]() If the ECU is fine and it turns out to be an issue with the bike that gets resolved at the dealership, then I'm either stuck with a set of Cobra pipes that I can't use on my bike effectively with what will then be a stock ECU, or I pay again to have the ECU flashed to the exhaust. IF it turns out that the ECU is the culprit, judging by our last phone call I'm fairly certain that Ivan and I can work something out to have it reflashed to my Cobra exhaust. I checked the engine oil level and it was good, so I let it run for a couple of minutes and the noise didn't go away, so I'm thinking a reflash to stock ECU and install stock exhaust and a trip to the dealership might be necessary. I planned to go for a ride yesterday morning, but upon starting the bike there was a very noticeable "ticking" sound emitting from the rear cylinder head cover area.
